How to sleep on your contour pillow? A subject, I once thought warranted no mention. But as I found out, the difference between whether or not you snore can come down to how you place your head on your pillow.

contour pillow Every one has a different ritual of how they get into bed and prepare for sleep. It may simply be the way you pull your bed covers back, but none the less, no matter how ceremonious your routine is or isn’t, you have a routine. Part of that routine is preparing your pillow and/or resting your head on your pillow ready for sleep. How you do this, may determine how well you sleep through the rest of the night.

So, how should you sleep on your contour pillow? The first thing is to get a pillow that fits your body shape correctly. I also suggest a firmer pillow, one you’re comfortable with, but preferably not too soft.

When people lay there head on their pillow, many of them tuck their chin down towards their chest, leaving their chin off the end hanging in mid air. By dropping the head forward, the airway becomes smaller with a greater bend in it. This increases resistance requiring more energy to breathe and increases the turbulence in the throat with an associated increased possibility of snoring. When you lie on your contour pillow , face straight ahead. That is, if you are lying on your side in bed you should be looking directly at the wall at a 90 degree angle, not some acute angle. Try it and feel how much easier it is to breathe.

If you naturally sleep with your head dropped down, then when you change to the new position for the first time it may feel a little strange. You may also feel as though you want to let your mouth fall to an open position. If you have a contour pillow, the bulge or contour of the pillow that is closest to the shoulder holds and supports your chin, helping to keep your mouth shut.

A new pillow can take several nights or even weeks to get used to. You may have been sleeping in a less than ideal position for some time and the habit can be frustrating to break. But this simple re-alignment can do wonders for your sleeping and your snoring! Additionally there should be less pressure on your back and shoulders so you should wake feeling more refreshed.
