What are CPAP machines? CPAP is an acronym that stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. A CPAP is a breathing machine designed to keep your airways open while you are asleep. In its simplist form, it is an air blower. Of course they are little more sophisticated having different settings and attachments but the underlying function is that of an air-blower.
Other common names you’re likely to come across are the BiPAP and AutoPAP. These are more refined models of the basic CPAP. The main difference is that the air pressure delivered while inhailing or exhaling is different making it easier to breathe overall. Some can even breathe for you if you stop.
For suffers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, CPAP is the medical treatment of choice in most parts of the world. They have been shown to be very effective in reducing the two major symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, snoring and day time tiredness.
It is not always easy to adjust to using CPAP. It may take some time to get the correct settings and overcome some of the usage problems inlcuding the claustrophobic feeling, nasal irritation and dryness, skin irritation and even pressure sores caused by the mask. But sufferers who have reached acceptance of their machine claim it is well worthwhile.
When considering which CPAP machine is best for your situation, you will have to take into account several factors including -
- Size of the machine – if you travel regularly you will probably want a more portable model.
- Consideration of a humidifier – there are a range of different CPAP humidifiers that may or may not work with your machine.
- The type of
CPAP mask
you require – this is possibly more important than the type of machine.
- How much will it cost?
- Does your CPAP support Monitoring Software – software that can be used to check the efficacy of the settings and your overall treatment regime?
- Do you need to buy new or can you get it second hand?
