List of Sleeping Disorders
We have included on this page a list of sleeping disorders that make up the most common sleeping complaints. Not all of these types of sleeping disorders are snoring related but many have at least some connection.
Sleep apnea
- is a serious condition where the sufferer stops breathing multiple times per night. Narcolepsy - is the condition where sufferers fall asleep unexpectedly and sometimes inappropriately. The condition is not well understood but current thinking is that it is caused by an ill functioning nervous system and possibly an autoimmune disease triggered by lifestyle or a gene. Insomnia - is a condition where the sufferer cannot get to sleep, can not stay asleep or does get enough restful sleep during the night. It is thought as much as 25% of the population suffer from some form of insomnia. Hypersomnia - is a condition where the suffer's are affected with an excessive amount of sleepiness. Additional to being sleepy during the day suffer's can sleep for long periods at night and have trouble waking from their sleep in the morning. Restless leg syndrome
- is a condition where the suffer has an overwhelming urge to move their legs. In some cases there maybe involuntary jerking of the limbs.Bed wetting - is more prevalent in children and can be related to the child's breathing, as well as diet and muscle tightness. Sleep walking - is the phenomenon where suffers leave their bed in their sleep. Sleep walking episodes range in duration and intensity and are thought to effect up to 10% of the population. Bruxism - is characterized by teeth grinding and jaw clenching while sleeping Catethrenia - A disordered breathing pattern that is characterised by breath holding and expiratory groaning or whistling that happens nearly exclusively during REM sleep. Dyssomnias - are a list of sleeping disorders where suffers either have difficulty getting to sleep or in remaining asleep. These disorders are characterized by a disturbance in the amount, quality and/or timing of a suffer's sleep.
