Top Three Reasons for Snoring

I have put together what I consider the top 3 reasons for snoring. If you or your partner snores you have probably seen a 101 different solutions. And it is confusing what the best option to try is. Each solution in itself seems to be a valid answer. But the correct and best solution to each individual’s snoring doesn’t lie in the myriad of devices, potions and cures rather in the reason why they snore in the first place.

#1 Reason for snoring

Of all the reasons for snoring, the one that effects most people is some form of disordered breathing. Disordered breathing just means that you are not breathing in an efficient and healthy manner. Another way of describing disordered breathing is incorrect breathing. There are quite a range of disordered breathing conditions that can cause snoring and this is why one solution does not fix all snoring. So how do you fix disordered breathing at night? Research has shown that people who snore due to disordered breathing at night also exhibit disordered breathing during the day. Your night time problem is cured by paying attention to, and adjusting your day time breathing. A simple first place to start is with some diaphramatic breathing exercises that have been shown to manage a range of stress, tension, and other psychological issues.

#2 Reason for snoring

The second biggest factor in causing people to snore is diet and exercise. A common tip for snorers, one that I don’t necessarily agree with, is to lose weight. But it is not the weight in it self that causes the snoring. It is often the food choices that people make that encourages disordered breathing. Many people who make a conscious change in diet to healthier food choices lose their snoring before they lose any weight. In my opinion the link between weight and snoring is simply the foods that encourage disordered breathing and snoring also contribute to weight gain. The second part of this equation is exercise. Exercise expands the breathing range. People who regularly exercise are breathing at rest well within their capacity. But those who don’t exercise have their capacity reduced to a point where their capacity is their resting range. And in a similar way to those who diet, snorers who start to exercise often see a reduction in their snoring before the exercise has a noticeable effect on weight.

#3 Reason for snoring

The last major reason for snoring that I want to address here is that of a physical nature. These physical problems can be congental but are more likely due to some form of trauma. For example a deviated septum due to a broken nose. Many snoring solutions want to start at this point but as you can see I have only rated it in the #3 spot. Manibular devices look to change the position of the lower jaw to stop the tongue falling back and blocking the airways. Surgery looks at making physical changes to open the air passage ways. Other devices look at keeping the nasal passages open. These solutions, especially surgery should only be addressed after looking at correcting basic irregular breathing patterns. The physical structure is often blamed for snoring. Partly I think because it is easier to explain to the sufferer “its your weak jaw, its not your fault, here is the solution” and partly because there is more financial reward in finding a physical solution.

The best way to address your snoring is by looking at these reasons for snoring in the order given. Many people disregard the #1 reason, disordered breathing, out of hand. We don't recognize in ourselves when our breathing has become non-normal. And some form of disordered breathing is probably prevalent in the greater majority of the population than not.
