A Lifestyle Approach to Remedy Snoring

If you want to remedy snoring, you have to find the underlying cause. Snoring is not an affliction like the common cold, where you wake up one morning and you’ve just got it. It is something that normally arrives slowly over time. Most people can’t remember the day and date that their snoring started. It was sometime in my mid 30’s or some such vague description is the normal response to a question on its arrival.

The lifestyle approach to remedy snoring, doesn’t treat it as a condition or a disease. But rather treats it as a symptom, or a warning, that the body is out of balance. Working through this site I hope that you will come to appreciate snoring for what it is, a warning sign letting you know changes are required.

I like to think of snoring like the ground proximity alarm in a modern jet aircraft. (The one that goes “WOOP! WOOP! PULL UP! PULL UP!”, if the aircraft gets too close to the ground when it’s not supposed to). If you are a pilot, you’d prefer not to hear it. But if you did, you would be grateful for the warning before dire consequences arrived. I'm sure the warning siren must be very annoying when it is activated but a lot less painful than the alternative. Likewise snoring is annoying, but not responding to the warning may have more serious consequences.

The above example may seem extreme but the reality is there has been an enormous amount of research in recent years linking snoring to a range of serious conditions such as hypertension and coronary disease.

The human body is a truly amazing machine. It has the ability to self regulate a complex array of interacting chemical and electrical processes within fine tolerances. This ability of homeostasis means the body can keep the internal systems (e.g. blood pressure, body temperature, acid-base balance) in equilibrium despite changes in the external environment.

However if the body is subjected to persistent extreme conditions outside the normal bounds of function then it may not be able to rectify the situation without help. For instance if your body gets cold, it starts to shiver to maintain its core body temperature. But if your body is subjected to sub zero temperatures without any external heating then shivering alone will not be able to stop the inevitable deadly conclusion. But the act of shivering is, in itself, a warning for you to take some action; put some warmer clothes on for example.

Snoring can be set off by a number of different balance upsets that are addressed in this site. If you work through them two important things are going to happen. You’re eventually going to stop snoring and you’ll end up with a healthier body. A snoring solutions doesn't necessarily require a big change in your lifestyle.

What changes can be made?

Diet
The body is greatly affected by what you eat. If you think about it, of all the external stimuli that you present to your body, this is one that is most under your control and the most influential on your well-being. What you eat can effect your snoring and a change in diet can quickly remedy your snoring (without having to lose weight).

Breathing
People tend not to even think about their breathing. They don't appreciate, or in most cases even realize, the impact that incorrect breathing has on their health. But improving how you breathe can greatly enhance your health and help eliminate your snoring..

Stress
Stress and how we face and manage that stress has a huge impact on our body and bodily functions. Often the impact that stress has on our lives is only obvious after we have reduced it. Reducing stress or improving the way you control and manage stress has a positive impact on your snoring.

Exercise
Muscle tone and strength impact our health and our feeling of well being in many ways. Besides increasing your fitness, the right exercise can reduce your snoring.
Environment
Quality of sleep is to some degree determined by our environment, both during the day and at night. The single most infuential change that you can make to your immediate environment is to reduce your exposure to smoking . Even second hand smoke has been shown to have an influence on snoring and other more serious health issues.

How we prepare for sleep, where we sleep and what we sleep on, affect our daily energy levels and can contribute to our snoring. Possibly the best home remedy for snoring is a decent pillow.

A word of warning:
When I discovered the significance of snoring for myself I was keen to pass the information on. People around me would know of my interest in this subject and ask me, “How do I stop my snoring?” I couldn’t wait to tell them only to be met with comments like, “That wouldn’t work for me, I’ve got a wide jaw” or some similar nonsense reason why they wouldn’t even try. I would try to impress on them that the snoring wasn’t the problem and left unattended they could end up with a much bigger health issue. All to no avail!

The thing I came to realize is that many people have handed over responsibility for their health to someone else. When they feel less than optimal they want a magic potion or pill to make them feel well again. They don't want to have to do anything for themselves. They ultimately hand over responsibility for how they feel or how long they live to someone else.

Unfortunately snoring isn’t the problem only a symptom of something else (not necessarily major or difficult to fix) and unless you are willing to take responsibility for your own health and make the changes yourself then you won’t progress.

This is the hard way, the slow way, it’s not the easy way, the quick fix way. But it is the best way, the surest way and the most satisfying, rewarding and empowering way. Remember anything worthwhile takes effort!

Deep down you know that what I have said is true. And if you remember back to when you started snoring there were probably other changes or warning signs around the same time.
