Snoring Remedies for Mouth Breathing
Snoring remedies that address the underlying changes that have caused your snoring, rather than those that mask the symptom (i.e. the noise) give the most meaningful results.
The chances are, you haven’t always been a snorer. Over time our bodies change and we change the way we use our body. As we age we tend to lose some muscle tone, including in and around the throat.
So when looking for a snoring remedies, a good place to start is with a natural non invasive approach like a snoring exercise program.
Nasal breathing is the preferred way of breathing. The nose filters, humidifies and warms the air before it reaches the lungs. The nose also acts as a valve to stop over breathing. If you breathe solely through the nose while you sleep you may find your snoring disappears.
As a test first try to recreate your normal snoring sound. Then try to recreate your normal snoring sound but this time block your mouth so you breathe only through your nose.
If you can breathe perfectly well through the nose during the day but at night find yourself breathing through your mouth then you may want to try an aid until you have retrained your breathing system. You can simply tape your mouth shut using medical tape or you could try using a jaw support or commercially available Chin Up Strips
to keep your mouth shut through the night.
The snoring sounds that come from the back of the throat while mouth breathing are produced by a constriction of the throat at the base of the tongue or vibration of the soft palate and uvula (palatal flutter) or a combination of both.
If you drop your chin down and back, you can feel your tongue doesn’t lie flat on the floor of your mouth but falls back into your throat. This can cause the constriction that causes snoring. If you have ever awoken, gagging because your tongue has fallen to the back of your throat and totally blocked your airway then this could well be your snoring problem.
There are several snoring remedies. You can exercise your jaw so that it doesn’t fall back by doing some
specific exercises
or you can use a Manibular Advancement device. This is something like a sports mouth guard that holds the lower jaw forward stopping your tongue from falling back and blocking the airway. If you have dentures you may have to see a dentist to get a device right for you.
If your snoring is caused by palatal flutter there are several snoring remedies. You can try changing your breathing technique. Palatal flutter is more likely with mouth breathing than nasal breathing. There are several surgical procedures for relieving your snoring. But any radical or irreversible treatments should be considered as a last resort. Before looking at surgery you should try
exercises to firm the soft palate and uvula
or a spray like Breathe Right Snore Relief that is all natural and has astringent qualities to firm and lubricate the throat.
